New Immigration Rules A Timely Rapid Response

Published: Fri 20 Apr 2001 12:44 AM
Allowing industry groups to recruit needed skills from overseas adds a welcome and timely flexibility to our immigration rules, the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern) says.
"Government is to be congratulated for its rapid response to industry's concern on this issue," said Alasdair Thompson, EMA's chief executive.
"The approach effectively makes new skills available from overseas on an as required basis.
"Now its up to us and our industry associations to ensure we make good use of the new provisions.
"But we regret New Zealand has to take such steps. It emphasises the need to increase our investment in education and learning in areas of skills shortfall."
