Census 2001 - District offices close: April 2001
Census District Supervisors Farewelled
The 407 district supervisors who were employed to manage the local operations for Census 2001 close their offices this week.
"Closing of the district offices symbolises the end of an impressive local task to ensure everyone in their community was counted on Census Night. The district supervisors were responsible for employing and supporting their local team of enumerators, and working within their community to ensure everyone had access to census forms and information," says Government Statistican Brian Pink.
Provisional population counts will be released on 28 May 2001. They provide a snapshot of the number of people and the number of occupied dwellings in New Zealand on Census Night. Final counts will be announced on 17 December 2001. More detailed information from the census will be available from 28 February 2002.
Although district supervisors have now completed their work, the 20 area management teams around the country will stay on until mid-May to finalise the operations in the regions. For those who still have queries regarding the census, the toll-free number 0800 80 2001 is available to use until Thursday evening, 12 April 2001. After that date, enquiries can be directed to Statistics New Zealand, by phoning Auckland (09) 379 0859, Wellington (04) 495 4600 or Christchurch (03) 374 8700.
"Over the period of the Census there was a very high level of co-operation and goodwill from the public. People understand that every five years they contribute to a valuable national statistical resource," says Government Statistican Brian Pink.
