Record Guest Nights
Guests spent 3.8 million nights in short-term accommodation during January 2001, according to Statistics New Zealand's
Accommodation Survey. This figure is 9 per cent above January 2000 levels, and is the highest monthly total for guest
nights since the survey began in July 1996. For each year of the survey, January has been the month with the highest
number of guest nights.
All regions recorded higher guest nights in January 2001 than in January 2000. South Island guest nights increased 16
per cent, while North Island guest nights were up 4 per cent.
All accommodation types, except caravan parks/camping grounds, reported their highest monthly total for guest nights
since the survey began in July 1996. Hotels recorded the largest growth rate, with 21 per cent more guest nights in
January 2001 than in January 2000.
International visitors accounted for 36 per cent of total guest nights in January 2001. Between the two January months,
international visitors staying in hotels recorded the largest growth rate of the accommodation types, with a 37 per cent
rise in guest nights. Total international visitor guest nights increased by 24 per cent in January 2001, compared with
January 2000. Guests nights increased from all country groupings.
Motels had the highest occupancy rate of all accommodation types in January 2001, at 64 per cent. Excluding caravan
parks/camping grounds, the national occupancy rate for January 2001 was 60 per cent, up from 55 per cent in January
2000.
