Manawatu based heavy trailer manufacturer Fruehauf Trailers has taken over the activities of McLeans Manufacturing Ltd
in Christchurch. McLeans Manufacturing is an established builder of innovative, high quality truck decks and trailers,
and will enable Fruehauf to offer a more comprehensive service to their South Island customers.
Fruehauf’s Chief Executive Kevin Smith says the company had been looking for a South Island base for some time. “Our
recent success in the marketplace made it important to have a physical presence in the South Island, and McLeans is a
perfect fit with what we do, and is ideally positioned to fulfil that role,” said Kevin Smith. “Our South Island Sales
Consultant, Paul Goodman will have a physical base, and will relish the extra support for his activities.”
“The high skill levels and experience of the existing McLeans employees will ensure that their output from Christchurch
to Fruehauf specifications will achieve the same high quality of workmanship as does output from Fruehauf Trailers in
Feilding”, said Kevin Smith, Chief Executive.
“The Christchurch branch of Fruehauf will be primarily involved in manufacturing and fitting truck decks and 5th wheels
to trucks, and will fulfil an overflow role in support of our main Feilding based facility, as well as supporting our
products in that area in any other way necessary”, said Kevin Smith, Chief Executive.
“We can see significant benefits to Fruehauf’s South Island customers with the facility in Wrights Road, Riccarton able
to respond promptly to customers. The Cook Strait barrier has effectively been broken.”
The changeover date is 1 March 2001, and the branch will trade as Fruehauf Trailers, Christchurch Branch.
