Retail Sales Indicator - January 2001
Seasonally adjusted retail sales for January 2001 are estimated at $3,715 million according to Statistics New Zealand's
Retail Sales Indicator. This early estimate suggests no change in the value of retail sales when compared with final
sales in December. January sales, excluding the motor vehicle sales and servicing storetypes, were $2,661 million, a
seasonally adjusted increase of 0.6 per cent on the corresponding final December total.
The Retail Sales Indicator is derived from early responses to Statistics New Zealand's monthly Retail Trade Survey. As
this has required a high level of imputation, the indicator should be used with care. For January, imputed responses
contributed 29 per cent of the published indicator. These estimates are based on the sales of other similarly sized
retailers in a comparable activity and location.
Final retail sales statistics for January, including the usual detailed storetype analysis, will be released on Monday
12 March 2001.
