The Latest Tax Evaders Gazette Released

Published: Mon 5 Feb 2001 02:46 PM
The latest edition of the Tax Evaders Gazette has been released, which lists those taxpayers, individuals and companies, who have been prosecuted, had penal tax or shortfall penalties imposed for evading their taxation obligations.
For the 12 months to 30 June 1999, over $1.75 million in taxes were evaded by 74 taxpayers. This has resulted in penal tax or shortfall penalties of $866,836 being imposed.
Inland Revenue further reminds taxpayers that they can make a voluntary disclosure if they have not met their taxation obligations. In these cases the department does not prosecute and imposes a smaller amount of penal tax as a result of the tax evader coming forward.
If taxpayers want to know more about this option they can obtain the Inland Revenue publication titled "Putting Your Tax Affairs Right" reference IR 282, by calling the department's automated telephone service INFOexpress on 0800 257 777. When calling please have your IRD number handy
Alternatively personal customers can call 0800 227 774 and business customers on 0800 377 774 for more information.
