Market leader BP today blitzed its rivals by dropping petrol and diesel prices by 10 cents a litre – twice what its
competitors are offering.
The price drop comes into effect from 4pm today (Friday, 2 Feb) and runs until midnight on Tuesday, 6 February. It will
drop prices at BP owned service stations in the main centres to between
89.9 - 94.9 cents for Unleaded 91, 94.9 to 99.9 cents for Premium Unleaded and 59.9 – 61.9 cents for diesel.
BP’s Managing Director Peter Griffiths said BP will do all it takes to win motorists’ loyalty.
Mr Griffiths said today’s price cut has nothing to do with international oil prices, and everything to do with a local
price war.
“New Zealand motorists are seeing cut-throat competition the likes of which we have never seen before and BP is at the
forefront of it.”
He said New Zealanders have proven over the past 20 years that they prefer to visit BP more than any of its competitors.
“That is because we have always been steps ahead of the others.
We give our customers more than great prices; we also give them superior fuels that are better for their cars and the
environment, and convenience stores that leave our competitors’ stores behind.”
Since BP introduced a high octane, environmentally-friendly petrol, BP Ultimate, in December, sales have soared. Most
service stations selling the new fuel have seen sales jump about 60%.
Sales of a new low-sulphur diesel introduced in Christchurch in December are also exceeding expectation. Both fuels are
New Zealand’s most environmentally friendly fuels and offer superior driving.
On Monday this week BP opened its first Connect state-of-the-art service station in New Lynn, Auckland. It is the first
of 80 BP Connect service stations that will revolutionize this country’s service station industry.
BP Connect stores offer customers superior fuels, Café Zip – a 24 hour cafe with fresh food and gourmet coffee - and
groceries at supermarket prices.
The BP Connect programme will create about 1,500 jobs in New Zealand over the next two years.
