Biolab Scientific Buys Lab Supply In Australia

Published: Tue 23 Jan 2001 11:32 AM
Biolab Scientific, through its subsidiary Selby Biolab, has purchased the Australian business, Lab Supply, a privately owned business with a turnover in the order of NZ$25 million.
The Biolab Group has been aggressively expanding in recent years and lately announced the development of OneZone, a digital marketplace aimed at meeting the purchasing needs of Australasian scientific, research and health organisations through a single website. The company has developed the leading e-commerce capability in the industry with 20% of its business through this channel. Last January they acquired New Zealand company SciTech.
“We see this acquisition of Lab Supply in Australia as part of the much needed industry rationalisation in this part of the world, with still more to occur”, said Bruce McKinnon, Group Chief Executive. “The market cannot continue to support the number of distributors present in the market, especially with the pressure being exerted in the supply chain by e-commerce.”
“This acquisition now makes us the clear leader in the Australian scientific market and the leader in Australasia”, said Wayne Powell, Managing Director of Selby Biolab. “Lab Supply was a good fit with our business, strengthening particularly the consumables business, but also taking us more positively into the microscopy market. Geographically, the Lab Supply strengths in Western Australia, New South Wales and the Northern Territories complement Selby Biolab.”
