TELECOM PLEASED WITH OUTCOME OF RADIO SPECTRUM AUCTION
Telecom is looking forward to using the $37.6million of radio spectrum it has purchased to develop a range of
innovative services for customers, Telecom General Manager Mobile Group Mohan Jesudason said today.
Welcoming the closure of the substantive part of the auction, Mr Jesudason said third generation technologies were
particularly exciting because in time they would provide fantastic opportunities for customers to access all kinds of
information.
“Telecom will continue to provide leading edge services and technologies to New Zealanders in the years ahead. We regard
the purchase of this spectrum as a critical investment in the future technological advance of New Zealand and in our
future business.
“While 3G technologies are still evolving, they are a vital part of Telecom’s future. We are working on ways to use the
technologies to provide advanced and innovative services to our customers in the longer term.
“While the development work is undertaken, our first focus will be on using CDMA (which uses existing spectrum) to
deliver enhanced data services via Telecom’s mobile phone network.
“The increased data speed from CDMA means people will be able to use their mobile phones for mobile commerce like share
trading and banking, and access the web from their mobile phone or laptop as quickly as they can from home.”
Over the next few weeks, following the conclusion of the auction, Telecom will be seeking Commerce Commission approval
for the spectrum purchased.
Mr Jesudason said the auction process had worked successfully overall.
“The auction was a very complex process and people were learning as the auction proceeded.”
