Construction To Recommence On Riverside Development
Riverside Casino Limited will immediately re-start construction of its central Hamilton entertainment complex following today’s Court of Appeal ruling reinstating its casino premises licence.
The Court of Appeal has overturned the High Court ruling that quashed the decision of the Casino Control Authority to award the licence to Riverside Casino.
The Court of Appeal found the High Court judge’s determination that one member of the Authority had displayed apparent bias in favour of granting the licence was not justified. The Court of Appeal’s decision has returned Riverside’s casino premises license, enabling construction of the $50 million entertainment complex to re-commence.
Riverside chairman Evan Davies said the people of Hamilton could now look forward to the opening of an entertainment complex they would be proud of.
“The Riverside complex will give Hamilton an entertainment location like no other in the region. It will be a new place to meet, where people can enjoy live entertainment and gaming in an environment well suited to the local community,” he said.
The re-start of the 12-month building project would immediately create 270 construction jobs, with a further 350 fulltime, permanent jobs available once Riverside opened. The development includes construction of the gaming area, restaurant, bars, entertainment lounge, and the car park. A separate project by Perry Developments Ltd includes the construction of an apartment complex and retail shopping arcade. In all, the entire project is valued at $65 million.
“As we have previously said, it is our intention to be a positive member of the Hamilton community. We will play an active role in furthering the development of the inner city area and the riverbank, as a supporter of community groups, and as a responsible host.”
