The Australian Internet Awards are the premier competition for recognising the achievements of Australia’s most talented
and innovative website owners, developers and designers.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s online services collected three of the coveted awards at the fifth annual gala
ceremony in Sydney.
ABC Online Best Media Site
This was awarded to the site which extends traditional print and broadcast media to the internet in a skilled or
innovative way, enhances the quality or diversity of Australian media or improves access to or understanding of the
media industry.
ABC Online has consistently set benchmarks and has been innovative in the media industry.
The committee of judges said, “The quality and range of content remains unmatched by any other media site. The design is
attractive and functional, and the smooth delivery underlines the degree of technical expertise under-pinning the
creative presentation. A great team effort.”
This award can be credited to the team, not only of ABC New Media, but to all the staff of the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation around the world who contribute to the success of the site. This is the fifth consecutive year the
Australian Broadcasting Corporation has won this award.
Dr Karl Best Science and Technology Site
Dr Karl is the site for the Triple J presenter Karl Kruszelnicki and is one of the most popular sites of The Lab, ABC
Science Online.
This award was given to a site which facilitates access to, encourages involvement in, or provides information about
scientific or non-internet related technologies.
The committee of judges said, “[Dr Karl] delivers the world of science and technology with characteristic flair and
humour”.
Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race - Best Sports Site
S2H is a site driven by the passion and interest of a group of likeminded Tasmanians. The site provides results, games,
expert reportage and commentary on the world famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
The site was produced in cooperation with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Live Networks and Tourism Tasmania.
This award was given to a site which facilitates access to, encourages involvement in, or provides information about any
sporting event, sporting activities, venues, or organisation.
The committee of judges said, “[S2H] provides a depth of coverage of a sporting event that should satisfy the most
demanding fan. The range of information it provides during the race makes it an essential resource, and the site endures
as a valuable archive, and an enticement to future events.”
