Ban Soggy Imports Call From IMVDA

Published: Tue 28 Nov 2000 03:29 PM
The Independent Motor Vehicle Dealers Association, representing over 400 legitimate vehicle importers, wants the Government to act immediately to ban soggy imports from entering this country.
Chief Executive Officer David Lynn says his members are demanding that vehicles that have already arrived be re-exported at the importers’ cost.
“This country does not need flood damaged vehicles imported here under any circumstances,” Mr Lynn says.
“We are concerned that the unsuspecting public could unknowingly be landed with one of these potentially lethal vehicles despite assurances that sellers are supposed to warn buyers of the vehicle’s history. Their arrival is already having an impact on reputable licensed dealers who want nothing to do with the soggy import industry.”
Mr Lynn says the IMVDA forewarned Government authorities of the likely arrival of flood damaged vehicles several months ago.
It asked that such vehicles be securely impounded and subjected to intense engineering, safety and MAF security investigations.
“Now,” says Mr Lynn, “we don’t want them here in any shape or form.”
He says licensed dealers view soggy vehicle importers as irresponsible and simply out to make a fast buck at the public expense. No reputable licensed dealer would be seen dead having anything to do with them.”
Meanwhile the chassis numbers of 130 vehicles flagged as being soggy imports are listed on the Land Transport Safety Authority website – www.ltsa.govt.nz.
Mr Lynn is urging the public and licensed dealers to check the site before buying any imported vehicle privately – from a car fair, auction or newspaper classified advertisement.
