Insurance Council Applauds Latest Burglary Statistics
In response to new statistics that indicate reported crime is on the decrease, the Insurance Council is today calling for increased resources for Police to continue the fight against crime.
The Insurance Council has applauded statistics released today by the New Zealand Police which indicate Police are now making real inroads into reducing crime. Of particular importance to insurers are statistics that indicate a decrease in recorded burglary and motor vehicle theft.
Insurers believe the rights of ordinary New Zealanders to safety and security in their homes, and the protection of their property, is paramount. Burglary is the crime most likely to be experienced by New Zealanders. New Zealanders have repeatedly indicated that the protection of their property, including homes and motor vehicles, is a priority.
"Now is the time to take advantage of the Police's success and allow the Police to place increased emphasis on burglary and theft rates", said Chris Ryan, Chief Executive of the Insurance Council.
Insurers are involved in a number of initiatives aimed at reducing theft. Operation SNAP is a trial scheme run by Police and insurers aimed at reducing the fencing of stolen goods. The Insurance Council is encouraging New Zealanders to identify their property through serial numbers, and to report these numbers to their insurer.
As many repeat burglars go on to commit more serious crimes later in life, strategies aimed at the early detection and rehabilitation of offenders will continue to be supported by insurers.
Insurers' currently pay out hundreds of millions of dollars in claims to New Zealanders who have been robbed of their property and motor vehicles. Last year, Insurance Council members paid out over $1 billion in claims of which almost $300 million was for claims relating to burglary and theft.
