Telecom mobile customers around the country will enjoy the surprise of a lifetime and will appear on televised spots
this weekend as the first winners of its Thanks a Million competition.
Telecom is celebrating the milestone of reaching one million connected to its mobile phone network by giving away $1
million in cash at the end of October, plus a huge array of weekly prizes during October.
“Reaching 1 million customers is a fantastic achievement for Telecom and we want to say thanks by offering to our
customers a succession of amazing prize draws,” said Telecom Mobile Marketing Manager Andre May.
The number of New Zealanders using mobile phones has doubled in little more than a year. To meet the demand for access
to the Internet and other data services Telecom is currently building a high-technology CDMA mobile network, planned to
go live mid-2001. Telecom is already trialling Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) with some customers to test the
technology’s data-based content and services.
“To thank our customers we’ve got a great range of prizes from Ford Explorers to one million Air New Zealand Airpoints
(the equivalent of seven return trips to London) to give away during October.
“Telecom mobile customers simply need to make one call on their mobile and they’re in the prize draw for that week. In
addition, all new customers who purchase a Telecom mobile phone and make one or more calls a week go in that week’s draw
to win other prizes such as a Vespa, a Queenstown Extreme Weekend and hundreds of other weekly prizes.
“In addition to those prizes are the big ones – all Telecom mobile customers who make a call in the week before 31
October go into the draw to win a share of one million dollars, with 10 lucky customers each receiving $100,000.
“Telecom is looking forward to bringing a whole host of new products and services to New Zealanders as we welcome our
next million customers,” Mr May said.
