Run the Red – ‘Think it, do it’ – the future of wireless technology
Wellington-based wireless communications (WAP) company Run the Red Ltd was keen to further the develop the potential of
wireless communications after making the finals of Nokia’s WAP competition with its very first foray into the uses of
wireless technology.
“We’ve shown what can be done with wireless technology – it’s about convenience, Run The Red showed how wireless
technology can be used to put customised information in front of people instantly, through their mobile phone,” said Run
the Red partner Ben Northrop.
Run the Red was a finalist in the ‘Entertainment’ category of Nokia’s competition with a WAP site that allows people to
view a real time Wellington activity guide, compiled by student radio station RadioActive, from their [WAP-enabled]
mobile phone. The Nokia competition required developers to show the power, and potential, of wireless technology.
“When we sat down and thought about the types of content that could be used, we looked at what we and our friends would
want.
“Whether you want to find and book a restaurant for dinner, check out what’s on in your area, make or check or a travel
booking, or book a hotel room, the possibilities are endless – RTR’s view is ‘think it, do it.’”
“With RTR people can customise information simply by going to their wap site and deciding what information they want in
much the same way as they can customise web content now,” said Ben Northrop.
“The real challenge is showing people how wireless technology can make a difference to their everyday lives. This is
not simply technology for stockbrokers or mobile sales reps – although the business possibilities are hugely exciting
and something we’re already working on.”
Run The Red is now working on developing a business model that can be replicated in other areas and with a wider range
of content.
