AVSEC GIVES GREEN LIGHT FOR HINDIN INTRANET
Aviation Security Service Invests in Unique MS Site Server Intranet Solution from Hindin Communications
Handling day to day security issues for aviation security staff at international airports is to become easier and more
personal thanks to a new Intranet solution from Hindin Communications. This solution is one of the first MS Site Server
installations in New Zealand.
Aviation Security Service (AvSec) is a specialist security provider that reports to the New Zealand Civil Aviation
Authority. The 186 staff, based at 7 airports, help guard against threat to Civil Aviation by screening all
international departing passengers, hand luggage, and some hold luggage and freight. This year AvSec won the first ever
Edith Cowan University/SATS Security award for the Outstanding Aviation Security Organisation in the Asia-Pacific
region.
Maintaining and improving excellence in aviation security is key to their success. “We aim for a zero rate of security
incidents at airports,” says Mark Williamson, AvSec Manager of Corporate Services. “We are committed to continually
reassessing, retraining and upgrading across all aspects of our services from security technology and use of
international and local intelligence to our practices and procedures.”
The latest technology upgrade has been the installation of a corporate Intranet. “We send reams of documents to staff on
a regular basis to keep them up-to-date of changes to policies and procedures, Civil Aviation rules and so on,” said
Mark Lilly, AvSec IT Systems Manager. “To make the task of wading through documents easier for our staff, we chose
Hindin Communications to provide the best solution. Their proposal and ability not only matched our expectations, they
also showed a high level of commitment and professionalism.”
The decision to use MS Site Server was based on performance, flexibility, ease of use and the friendly ‘personalisation’
that can be activated across the network. The software can deliver timely and relevant information in the form of
personalised web pages and targeted emails to the desktops of individuals and groups. “In the near future, we aim to
interface Site Server with our other applications, i.e. the ID card system, statistical database programme and MS Office
programmes, so that all workstations will have the same look and feel,” explained Lilly. “It will help simplify training
and make it a lot easier for staff to use.”
“Even though New Zealand is small,” said Williamson, “AvSec has a high profile in international aviation security. We
maintain awareness of international security threats and the modern environment by networking with other agencies and
authorities and keeping a close eye on industry trends.”
“APEC involved the biggest security operation of its type ever seen in New Zealand. It was a massive exercise, planned
over a 2-3 year period, that required both on and off-airport security. For instance, we provided screening services for
President Clinton’s visit at the Antarctic Centre in Christchurch, and his talks with the Chinese President at the
Government House in Auckland. The operation was successful and on the whole went very smoothly,” said Williamson.
Mark Lilly explained, “Now that the Intranet is up and running, it will help AvSec disseminate information to our staff
more quickly and efficiently. Plus with the interfacing of our existing systems such as the staff rostering system,
security operations such as that seen during APEC will be easier to orchestrate.”
