Following the election at its AGM of nine new councillors to the Internet Society of New Zealand (ISOCNZ), the first
meeting of the newly elected Council saw the start of the transition to the proposed new business structure for Domainz,
the ".nz" registry.
The Council endorsed the continuing work of the SRS Working Group, headed by Victoria University Professor John Hine,
which has recommended major change to the way the New Zealand domain name space (".nz") is managed. A target reporting
date was set for the 30th of September, after another round of consultations with stakeholders.
The Council meeting saw the retirement of the existing Domainz Board and the appointment of an interim Board, charged
with ensuring business continuity for the registry while preparation for the transition to a new model takes place.
The interim Board will oversee the running of the Domainz business until the completion of the SRS Working Group's
report or the 31st of October, whichever is sooner.
ISOCNZ Executive Director, Sue Leader, says "the interim Board retains one former board member, James Scott, President
of the Wellington Branch of the Institute of Directors, and sees the return of former Board member Roger de Salis.
ISOCNZ Treasurer Keith Davidson, and new councillor Bob Gray make up the balance The new Board will take office after
the Domainz AGM on Monday 10th of July".
A desire for continuity at ISOCNZ, the sole shareholder in Domainz, was signalled by the re-election of the incumbent
Society officers: Peter Dengate Thrush - Chair, Frank March - Secretary, and Keith Davidson - Treasurer. Chair Peter
Dengate Thrush welcomed the opportunity to lead the society through this period of transition at Domainz. "We take our
responsibility for the management of the domain name system seriously and look forward to ensuring that ".nz" is one of
the best managed and stable name spaces in the world".
Executive director Sue Leader says "the society is committed to the changes taking place in a managed orderly fashion,
and the Council has signalled change at a pace that ensures that the domain name space (".nz") is not subjected to
stress or uncertainty".
