TARANAKI PHARMACIST WINS TOP AWARD
Robotic drug dispensing system impressed the judges
A New Plymouth pharmacist has taken top honours in the annual Pharmacy Awards.
The introduction of a robotic drug dispensing system on the wards at Taranaki Healthcare won chief pharmacist Elizabeth
Plant both the supreme award and top prize in the Innovation in Hospital Pharmacy category.
She wins a trip for two to Paris.
The annual awards, co-hosted by Pharmacy Today magazine and pharmaceutical wholesaler and distributor Zuellig Pharma,
recognise innovation in pharmacy practice.
The awards were presented recently at a black tie dinner for 450 guests in Auckland.
The introduction of the robotic drug distribution system has resulted in significantly fewer medication errors, nurses
spending less time handling medication, cost savings through one-off reduction in stock holding, and improved
relationships between pharmacy and nursing staff.

Risky move pays off A Gisborne pharmacist has taken top honours in the Pharmacy Design of the Year category in the
annual Pharmacy Awards.
Kelvin Tyler, Sun City Unichem Pharmacy, Gisborne, took a bold decision when he decided to move his pharmacy to a new
site.
Customer numbers were down, the pharmacy was surrounded by empty shops it was decision time.
Stay where he was and see out his lease which still had three years to run, or move? The best retail site in Gisborne
had just become available, so Kelvin Tyler decided to take the risk and invest in the future.

win customers with a new style of retailing, that his business approach in a suburban pharmacy had become decidedly
archaic.
In a situation where others might have looked to retire, Peter Wigmore took a totally new philosophical approach to his
business.
After researching several Australian pharmacies, he decided on a modestly priced refit to implement his new ideas.

\ A Christchurch pharmacist has been named Young Pharmacist of the Year in the annual Pharmacy Awards.
Claire Megget, The Palms Unichem Pharmacy, Christchurch, described a plan to reduce the incidence of headlice by
promoting the pharmacy staff as the local experts on the condition.

Nutrition expert also showed excellent retail savvy A Mt Wellington, Auckland, pharmacy assistant has taken top honours
in the Pharmacy Assistant of the Year category of the annual Pharmacy Awards.
Jai Patel, Unichem Neills Pharmacy, Auckland, transformed the natural product section into a specialist area aimed at
meeting the needs of her specific customers.
An expert in nutrition, she also showed excellent retail savvy, implementing monthly computerised reporting.
Her strategies included establishing a vitamin club and a lending library of books on nutrition.

INVERCARGILL PHARMACY ASSISTANTS WIN TOP AWARD
Grooming seminars boost sales
Two Invercargill pharmacy staff have taken top honours in the Cosmetic Marketing category of the annual Pharmacy
Awards.
Neetia Waddell who was also a winner last year and Sandra Cribb, Stewarts Pharmacy, Invercargill, have worked together
on a variety of makeovers, including clients of local fashion stores and hair salons, hair dressing competitions, local
stage shows, and have also tutored at training institutions.
It seemed the more women knew about make-up the more they bought, so Sandra and Neetia decided to take their makeovers
a step further and offer a 1st Impression Counts series of evening seminars on grooming, including skincare, fragrance,
hair, make-up and nails.
This outstanding initiative, during their own time, won them this coveted award.
Also named in the annual Pharmacy Awards was another Invercargill pharmacy assistant, Kahu McMurdo, of Unichem
Glengarry Pharmacy, who was runner-up in the Pharmacy Assistant of the Year category.

DUNEDIN PHARMACIST RUNNER UP IN BUSINESS AWARD SECTION OF THE ANNUAL PHARMACY AWARDS
New health services A Dunedin pharmacist is runner up in the Community Pharmacy Business Award category of the annual
Pharmacy Awards.
Peter Barron, The Otago Campus Pharmacy, Dunedin, took an existing pharmacy, threw out the sunglasses, gifts, hair
colours and shampoos to focus on over-the-counter medicines, non subsidised medicines, and a wide range of health
services.
In the first 12 months he targeted weight management, travel medicine, male health, methadone and IV drug users and the
student market.
Results are excellent.
He plans to introduce a wide range of diagnostic services, and to develop teaching links with the School of Pharmacy.
