NZ Employers' Federation Chief Executive Anne Knowles says the CTU's trade ban against Fiji is a downright boycott of
dealing with product and as such, is unlawful.
"Boycotts and secondary or sympathy strikes are not permitted under present legislation, and will not be permitted under
the new employment law either. The Minister of Labour's recent advice to New Zealanders was: 'While strikes and lockouts
will be allowed in support of multi-employer or multi-union bargaining, sympathy strikes will not'.
"All New Zealanders should be bound by the law of the land," Ms Knowles said.
"The CTU's and Waterfront Workers' Union's actions are not only unlawful, they are also capable of causing great
hardship to the ordinary working people of Fiji.
"We believe the Government should take steps regarding the matter immediately through the Department of Labour which has
the duty of ensuring that employment law is not breached."
