SPEIGHT’S BREWERY COUNTING DOOR NUMBERS TO FIND LUCKY 10,000TH VISITOR
Speight's Brewery staff are carefully counting visitors to its Heritage Centre Tours this week because they are expecting its 10,000th visitor to walk through any day.
At the end of last week, 9882 visitors had been on the world-class brewery tour that opened last September after a $1 million redevelopment.
Speight's Brewery Heritage Centre manager Kim Newman says they expect the lucky person to probably go through the tour towards the end of this week.
“We think it’ll probably be Thursday or Friday but it’s hard to predict - the forecast is for a bit of wet weather, and that usually brings in extra visitors,” she said.
“Being the 10,000th visitor would certainly bring a bit of sunshine to someone’s day though!”
The lucky 10,000th visitor will get their tour for free and will be presented with a special “Speight's Pack” that includes Speight's items such as a t-shirt, poster, key ring, magnets, history book, a dinner voucher for The Alehouse and, of course, Speight's beer.
It will also be a great milestone for the tour, putting it on track of its target to become one of Dunedin’s top three tourist attractions.
“Our aim when we opened, was to hit 12,000 visitors within a year,” said Ms Newman.
“Looking at the visitor numbers, we’re right on target to do that - in fact, we’re well ahead,” she said.
Ms Newman said the support for the interactive and entertaining tour had been excellent, from both here and overseas.

“We’re now getting interest from all around the world. Having just returned from a travel trade show in Christchurch where all the international travel agents and tour operators come to see what’s available in New Zealand for their clients, it was great to see the enormous amount of interest generated in the tour,” she said.
“It was the first time Speight's had attended the show and it was really well received – two companies from Australia and the UK have already confirmed that Speight's Brewery will be included in their tour series for this summer.”
“This weekend we also hosted travel agents from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and India, and all were really impressed.”
The tour is open seven days a week and introduces visitors to the history of beer from 6000BC through to New Zealand’s first brewer, Captain James Cook, who crafted a brew for his troops from manuka, rimu foliage, molasses and yeast.
It moves through to the history of the Speight's brewery, founded in 1876 and still on its original site, well-established as an historical part of Dunedin’s cityscape and the home of Speight's.
Visitors are guided through the Speight's Brewery, the Southern Hemisphere’s only working gravity-fed brewery, starting the process with the raw materials on the top floor and enjoying a taste of the Pride of the South at the bottom.
