Trade New Zealand on the road to a global ‘knowledge library’ with Silent One
Software developer Silent One Ltd and Advantage Group have completed work on a revolutionary web-based ‘knowledge
library’ for Trade New Zealand from which information can be shared across 40 offices and 350 people around the world.
Trade New Zealand deals in information, working on behalf of New Zealand exporters through a network of offices
stretching from South America to Europe. Dissemination of accurate, comprehensive and timely information is central to
creating strong international business alliances for the future of New Zealand’s trade. Trade New Zealand’s global
presence is a key strength but it creates its own set of challenges.
Trade New Zealand General Manager Corporate Services Arama Kukutai says the organisation selected the SilentOne product
to bring a totally new approach to managing its information.
“We found information was being replicated simply because it was not possible to store it as part of a single
enterprise-wide system. We wanted to capture and retain the intellectual capital that we were generating with a tool
that was globally accessible, secure, and easy to use.”
SilentOne, an Internet-based solution, has been deployed in both browser and windows client form, providing Trade New
Zealand with the ability to create a virtual ‘knowledge library’, from which information can be accessed from almost
anywhere in the world.
The result is a powerful and scaleable tool that allows Trade New Zealand to create and maintain a ‘knowledge library’
solution. Trade New Zealand is one of the first users in New Zealand to adopt this technology, which has given it a
significant edge in bringing together its knowledge of the global marketplace.
Mr Kukutai said SilentOne is being used to support a culture change in knowledge management within Trade New Zealand.
“We are very pleased with the outcome. We met all of our major milestones within specified time constraints and
SilentOne has been well received within Trade New Zealand. We view the use of such a revolutionary tool as a process we
will evolve over time to enhance service to our clients through greater leverage of our collective knowledge.”
Silent One Ltd’s Managing Director Ian Hight described SilentOne as a new generation solution.
“The SilentOne product allows the creation of real-time intelligent information libraries -- knowledge libraries -- that
allow an organisation to easily distil relevant information and make faster and more informed decisions,” he said.
SilentOne is an integrated approach to identifying, capturing, retrieving, sharing and managing document-based
information. It manages all the necessary security, integrity, classification and house-keeping functions with low
maintenance for its users. It is fully integrated with Microsoft Office applications, using Microsoft Internet
Information Server and Index Server as its core components. SilentOne also uses NT security, allowing customers to
leverage their existing Microsoft investment.
Advantage Group customised SilentOne to Trade New Zealand’s precise requirements. Account Director Wayne Forgesson said
the close liaison between Silent One Ltd, Advantage and Trade New Zealand was one of the key factors in the project’s
success.
“A new product like SilentOne creates enthusiasm and this is very valuable in creating an effective and focused project
team,” he said.
“I believe there is no other information product available overseas that is in the same league as SilentOne. Already we
are involved in several more SilentOne projects.”
Silent One Ltd is geared to go live with knowledge library developments within other leading New Zealand organisations
wanting to benefit from this New Zealand produced product.
