INTEL DEMONSTRATES FASTEST DESKTOP MICROPROCESSOR
AT ASIA PACIFIC INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM
AUCKLAND, April 19, 2000 - Intel Corporation has opened the Asia Pacific Intel Developer Forum (IDF) by demonstrating
the capabilities of the company's fastest microprocessor, code-named “Willamette.”
Based on a new microarchitecture from Intel, Willamette is due to be introduced later this year, “The year 2000 will be
Intel’s biggest product year ever,” said Intel’s Senior Vice President Albert Yu. “We will introduce two new
microarchitectures in Willamette for desktops and Itanium™ for servers and workstations, as well as a ‘smart
integration’ processor code-named ‘Timna’ designed for value PCs. Intel is pleased to offer this performance technology
to the Internet economy.”
Willamette Microarchitecture and the Intel® Pentium® III Processor at 1GHz
During the demonstration at IDF, Willamette operated well in excess of 1 GHz. Key features of the microarchitecture were
outlined which included:
a new hyper-pipelined design that enables processor instructions to be queued and executed at a faster rate to achieve
the world's highest clock speeds for desktop PCs
a set of new Streaming SIMD instructions that enhance performance and support the next generation of Internet
computing applications; and
the computing industry's first 400 MHz system bus that transfers information from the processor to the rest of the
system three times faster than the 133 MHz system bus used today.
Additionally, a system was demonstrated based on the recently introduced Pentium III processor running at 1 GHz.
Intel's First "Smart Integration" Architecture
Timna, Intel's first “smart integration” microprocessor and a leadership product for the value PC market segment was
outlined. Designed to set a new standard of platform price-performance in the value segment, Timna is based on Intel's
current P6 microarchitecture. It incorporates a central processing unit core, memory controller, and graphics into one
chip to deliver the performance, features, and cost benefits needed for value PCs. Timna will complement the current
Intel Celeron™ processor line when it is introduced in the second half of 2000.
Technologies for a New Era of Desktop Computing
Also shown were a combination of technologies and initiatives designed to help fuel a new generation of business
and consumer PCs. This included the unveiling of concept PCs that "fit easily into your hand," the demonstration of a
USB 2.0 product and
an effort to advance PC graphics capabilities through the "Beyond AGP4x Initiative."
Internet and e-Business with Intel Mobile Solutions
A mobile Intel® Pentium® III processor featuring SpeedStep™ Technology was demonstrated, a revolutionary power
management solution from Intel that enables a mobile PC to operate in two different modes: Maximum Performance Mode and
Battery Optimised Mode. The system automatically chooses which mode to run in, depending whether the computer is running
on battery or plugged into AC power.
