Distillers say Fix Liquor Sales Anomalies
Shoppers should be able to buy spirits, liqueurs, ports, sherries, wine coolers and general alcohol beverages, alongside beer and wine, at their supermarket said Thomas Chin, Chief Executive Officer of the Distilled Spirits Association.
As another review of our liquor laws is taking place, this time the focus on licensing trusts, the distillers are urging the Commerce Select Committee to recommend a small legislative amendment to fix other outstanding retail anomalies.
“Our liquor laws need to be fair and equitable. They also need to be consumer friendly. People should be able to have a full range of choice at all outlets.”
"If it is OK for bottlestores, pubs, taverns, restaurants, clubs, canteens and even Parliament’s Bellamy’s to sell all types of liquor, then why should shoppers not be able to buy the full range of product from their local supermarket", asks Mr Chin.
"One can only look with envy at shoppers in Canberra, London, Dublin, and Los Angeles to name a few, who are able to buy all their drink supplies with their groceries. They are not much different from your average New Zealander".
A real opportunity exists for Parliament to remedy the current illogical and anti-competitive liquor laws. Spirits and other alcohol beverages, regardless of retail store format, should be treated on the same basis as beer and wine.
Written submissions to the Commerce Select Committee hearing the Sale of Liquor Amendment Bill close Friday 14 April.
