NOKIA TAKES ANOTHER LEAP IN INNOVATIVE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP AT ASIA PACIFIC LAUNCH EVENT
Nokia unveiled its latest technology innovations and a new range of mobile phones at a creative launch platform created especially for business partners and press from all around the Asia Pacific region.
Themed "Nokia - dEsigned for Life", the product launch at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre served as a distinctive platform to profile Nokia's new products, reinforcing its leadership in design, lifestyle segmentation and advanced technologies. The theme captures Nokia's design ingenuity, its intuitive insights into consumers' needs and lifestyles, as well as its vision of the e- world, contributing to the creation of products and solutions that connect people and organisations at every phase of life.
For the occasion of the launch, Nokia created a totally experiential technology journey which brought participants in touch with Nokia's new products and technology. Guests made personal 'journeys' through three thematic worlds - Designed for The Active Life, Designed for The Business Life and Designed for The Evolving Life - where each world parallels the evolution of technology and Nokia's leadership at the helm, leading the way to the new era of the Mobile Information Society
At Designed for The Active Life, Nokia unveiled the Nokia 6250, a fully featured dual band GSM 900/1800 WAP compliant phone, designed for a non-office environment and is suitable for hobbyists. Moving onto Designed for The Business Life, participants experienced Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) technology and faster wireless access and connectivity via High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD), and were also acquainted with the new Nokia 6210 - a slimline, ergonomically designed, and highly versatile business phone.
"At Nokia, we continually delight our consumers by developing innovative, value-added products which meet their individual and varied lifestyle needs. Our consumers' emphasis on personalisation is matched by our increasing range of product innovations, each with a distinctive appeal and functionality. With this in mind, Nokia has designed the Nokia 6250, launching a totally new product category - for the outdoor, rugged environment," said Nigel Litchfield, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Asia Pacific.
"Today's consumers want to be continually connected to personalised services no matter where they are. Speed is of the essence as total connectivity and mobility within and outside the office becomes seamless. This is why Nokia has unveiled the Nokia UltraSite Base Station, to meet the increasing demands for mobile operations to introduce seamless solutions. With the advent of the Mobile Information Society, consumers expect the latest technology and products which provide "always-on" access to information and services. Operators, manufacturers, and service providers alike, are challenged to meet this growing need with viable and creative solutions," said Kari Ahola, Senior Vice President, Nokia Networks, Asia Pacific.
In response to this, Nokia's showcase today includes a plethora of value-added services such as financial information, news on-line and mobile commerce as well as demonstrating faster wireless connectivity and data speeds which are fundamental to the facilitation of these services.
A technology debate, with panellists from various fields and expertise, was specially organised in conjunction with the event. Sitting on the "dEsigned for Life" panel are Dr Andrew Lippman, Associate Director of MIT's Media Lab; Dr John Ure, Director of Telecommunications Research, Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong; Mr Alistair Curtis, Group Director, Americas, Nokia Design Center and Mr Jeffrey Markley, Business Director, OgilvyInteractive Hong Kong.
A series of specialised workshops was also held for about 300 industry participants and customers, as well as 150 journalists from over a dozen markets across Asia Pacific. Workshop topics include areas of interest ranging from WAP applications and services, 3G content and application to consumer lifestyle and trends.
The "Nokia - dEsigned for Life" event charts the continuation of Nokia's mould-breaking Asia Pacific product launch concepts. Nokia's 1998 and 1999 regional launch events earned it an Asian PR Awards' Honourable Mention for Technology Campaign of the Year in two consecutive years, for creativity and strategic execution.

NOKIA INTRODUCES THE NEW TRIPLE-MODE NOKIA ULTRASITE BASE STATION AND SITE SOLUTION
THE GATEWAY TO MOBILE MULTIMEDIA
Nokia unveils for the first time in Asia Pacific, the new Nokia UltraSite - a complete triple mode GSM, EDGE and WCDMA site designed for enabling smooth migration to 3rd Generation services. It is a true multimedia-ready base station supporting High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) services.
To maximise operators' current investments, the Nokia UltraSite Base Station can be installed as an upgrade to existing GSM base stations to increase site capacity, or to enhance network data capability. With Nokia EDGE and WCDMA tranceivers, this solution will enable Mobile Multimedia applications such as videotelephony, infotainment, mobile Internet and intranet access.
"Nokia UltraSite is the answer to increasing demands that higher data traffic will place on GSM networks in the coming years," says Jyrki Holmala, Regional Director, Mobile Systems, Asia Pacific. "This solution provides both existing and new Nokia customers with a gateway to Mobile Multimedia services, smoothly and efficiently. If operators are uncertain about investment strategies for GSM, EDGE and WCDMA networks, the Nokia UltraSite gives freedom and flexibility for operators to scale their network evolution according to demand."
The triple mode Nokia Ultrasite caters for GSM, EDGE and WCDMA configurations, as well as combinations of any three. This unique product means that operators are able choose the technology they need, whether they want to offer GSM, EDGE or WCDMA services.
In addition to the unique multi-standard base station, the compact, high-capacity Nokia UltraSite includes all the necessary site elements such as transmission, antenna and a support cabinet for battery back-up.

NOKIA COMPLIMENTS 3RD GENERATION SYSTEM WITH NEW LAUNCHES TRIPLE-MODE NOKIA METROSITE FAMILY IDEAL FOR GSM, EDGE AND WCDMA
Nokia has enhanced and added to its 3rd Generation System Solution, that provides EDGE and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) networks for mobile operators. After introducing the world's first triple-mode Nokia UltraSite Base Station for wide area coverage, Nokia also unveils for the first time in Asia Pacific this multi-standard capability to traffic hot-spots with the Nokia MetroSite Base Station family, providing capacity and coverage enhancement for global GSM, EDGE and WCDMA network operators.
Building on Nokia's leading position in 3rd Generation network solutions, a seamless transition to true mobile multimedia services can be built from GSM through General Packet Data Services, to EDGE and WCDMA. The Nokia 3rd Generation Systems offer smooth evolution from 2nd Generation technology, providing a complete network solution for both new and existing mobile operators.
Marko Tiesmaki, Regional Director, Mobile Systems, Asia Pacific, says; "By expanding our product range, Nokia gives operators the ability to scale their networks according to service demand, protecting their network investments and providing an optimum portfolio of services for their end-users. Now, the winners will be those who begin looking towards mobile multimedia now. Nokia is leading the transition from mobile voice to mobile data, for operators, content providers and Internet Service Providers."
To complement the popular Nokia MetroSite capacity solution, Nokia introduces two new products: the Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station for GSM and TDMA markets and the Nokia MetroSite WCDMA Base Station for 3rd Generation networks. These new additions to Nokia's unique "triple-mode" product family are part of Nokia's vision to provide a smooth evolution path to 3rd Generation mobile networks.
The new Nokia MetroSite WCDMA Base Station provides focused coverage and capacity to help operators complete their WCDMA networks seamlessly. Designed to be compact and lightweight, it is suitable for locations that offer limited space such as poles, walls, tunnels and attics, in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Its compact size and design helps to speed up site implementation for rapid network rollout, resulting in shorter time to market for new mobile multimedia services. The Nokia MetroSite WCDMA Base Station can be co-sited with Nokia MetroSite GSM and EDGE Base Stations to limit the number of new sites needed when rolling out a WCDMA network. This can lead to significant savings in equipment costs.
The new high-power Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station offers full GSM/EDGE capability from the outset. It is not only effective in the same microcellular applications as the original Nokia MetroSite Base Station, but is also ideal for infill coverage in macrocellular networks.
Nokia also unveils the unique Nokia Smart Radio Concept (SRC); a flexible antenna solution designed to help mobile operators reduce capital investments during initial rollout of WCDMA networks.
The high bit rates needed to provide seamless 3rd generation services demand good coverage and sufficient capacity throughout the WCDMA network service area. With the Nokia SRC solution, operators can improve capacity by up to 75% with roughly 30 % fewer sites than would be otherwise required with traditional network rollout methods.
In addition, the triple-mode Nokia UltraSite solution has been enhanced with a new Nokia UltraHopper Microwave Radio transmission option.
Nokia provides 3G systems for both WCDMA and EDGE technologies. These include Base Station Subsystems, Circuit and Packet Switching Systems, Service and Network Management Systems including Service Provisioning and Billing, and 3G Terminals. In addition to infrastructure and software, Nokia Professional Services provides comprehensive service solutions for planning, deploying, managing and enhancing 3G systems.
A leader in the cellular industry in many markets in Asia Pacific, Nokia provides innovative, industry leading and market- relevant technology and products to around 30 diverse markets in the region.
