MAINLAND PRODUCTS LTD MEATS DIVISION EXPANDS VOLUNTARY RECALL OF DELI MEAT PRODUCTS - UPDATE AND AMENDED LIST
Mainland Products Ltd Meats Division announced today that its Oamaru meat processing plant has provided an amended list
of cooked deli meat products voluntarily recalled on the 18th February. The additional products expand the initial
recall of FRASERS SILVERSIDE that may contain Listeria monocytogenes. The list of specific brands and products for the
entire recall is attached.
Continuing investigation into the issue has not yet been able to identify and isolate a probable cause of contamination,
and as a result the company is voluntarily expanding the scope of product recall as a precautionary measure. The company
is working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure that products will not be sold until appropriate safety
standards are confidently achieved.
"Because we have been unable to quickly pinpoint the cause of contamination, and thereby isolate the potential risk, we
are now taking voluntarily steps in recalling a wider range of related cooked meats. These products will be removed from
sale until we are totally confident we have solved the problem at hand and can deliver expected product safety
consistently," said Park Beede, General Manager of Marketing for Mainland Products Ltd.
The recall does not affect uncooked meat products, such as bacon, and meat products processed at the company's other
production locations in the North Island. The recalled cooked meat products have been removed from sale through retail
outlets, and all meat products which remain available for sale should be considered perfectly safe.
The Listeria bacteria is widespread and commonly found in the environment, including soil, water and raw foods such as
uncooked meats and vegetables. Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis, - a potentially fatal illness which mainly
affects the young, elderly, pregnant women and immunocompromised.
Anyone concerned about such an illness should contact a physician immediately.
Customers who have recently purchased cooked deli meats originating from the company's Oamaru processing plant should
not eat these products and should contact FRASERS meat products for a replacement voucher or full refund. Consumers with
