NOKIA AND FUJIFILM TO CO-OPERATE IN DEVELOPING BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY TO SEND DIGITAL STILL IMAGES AND APPLICATIONS
TECHNOLOGY
Nokia and Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. of Japan today announced that they have agreed to co-operate in developing
Bluetooth technology to transmit digital still images between mobile devices and digital cameras. Both companies are
members of the Bluetooth consortium, and Nokia is a co-founding member of Bluetooth initiative.
Nokia and Fujifilm are working together in developing Bluetooth technology for imaging applications. One key element of
wireless imaging will be the seamless transfer of digital photos between cameras and mobile phones, hence creating a new
dimension to mobile messaging. The target of the co-operation is to integrate Fujifilm's digital image processing
technology and Nokia's mobile expertise: Picture transmission from digital cameras to mobile devices will be carried out
using Bluetooth technology.
Nokia and Fujifilm are also planning to develop infrastructure regarding the Fujifilm Digital Imaging Service, which
will be launched in the future in Europe and will enable customers to have these pictures printed via Bluetooth
technology. Both companies will demonstrate their technology co-operation at CeBIT 2000 exhibition, in Hanover, Germany
(starting February 24th) with the pilot in which a digital camera and a mobile device are connected by using Bluetooth,
About Bluetooth:
Bluetooth is an industry consortium founded in 1998 by Ericsson, Intel, IBM, Nokia and Toshiba. Recently, four
companies, 3Com Corporation, Lucent Technologies, Microsoft Corporation and Motorola Inc, joined five older promoter
companies. With these nine companies serving as the core promoters, more than 1,300 companies throughout the world are
taking part in the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) and are holding discussions over technological specifications.
Bluetooth is a standard initiative for a low power, short distance radio link that operates on a license-free 2.4GHz
band. A Bluetooth chipset enables wireless data connectivity between various electronic devices like mobile phones,
laptops and digital cameras within a radius of about 10 meters, without line of sight.
Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the
leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks, related services as well as
multimedia terminals. In 1999, net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is
listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 55
000 people.
