Work Stoppages: September 1999 quarter
Thirteen Stoppages Ended in September 1999
Thirteen work stoppages ended in the September 1999 quarter according to latest figures from Statistics New Zealand.
This compares with five in the previous quarter and 12 in the same quarter last year. It is the highest number of work
stoppages in a quarter since the June 1997 quarter when there were 16 work stoppages.
Some 3,817 employees were involved in work stoppages that ended in the September 1999 quarter. The 13 stoppages resulted
in the loss of 4,410 person days of work and an estimated $0.5 million in salaries and wages. All 13 of the stoppages
were complete strikes.
In the year to September 1999, 30 stoppages ended compared with 34 in the September 1998 year. The September 1999 year
stoppages involved 6,220 employees and a loss of 9,754 days of work. An estimated $1.2 million in wages and salaries was
lost. In comparison, the 34 work stoppages that ended in the September 1998 year involved 16,591 employees, a loss of
22,700 person days of work and an estimated loss of $3.2 million in salaries and wages.
In the September 1999 year, 9 of the 30 work stoppages were in the manufacturing industry; 8 were in education; and 5
were in the health and community services industry. The remaining 8 were in all other industries combined.
