Australian Defence Force
DAILY UPDATE 27SEP99
INTERFET continues to build the confidence of the local population through security patrols, food distribution and
humanitarian assistance. An increase in the numbers of locals remaining in Dili overnight indicates a perception of
increased security provided by INTERFET.
INTERFET continues patrol activities throughout Dili.
Operations outside of Dili include a permanent presence at Baucau where the airport, hospital and electricity plant have
been secured, and Philippine forces are now in position.
The deployment of personnel to Dare and Eamori (both within 20km of Dili) continues.
A UN humanitarian convoy was escorted to Baucau over the weekend.
INTERFET forces deployed in East Timor number about 3 800 (approximately 3300 Australian).
The main focus of air and sea operations in the past 24 hours continues to be the build up the logistic support for
INTERFET.
The countries that now have forces deployed either in Australia or East Timor include Australia, United States, United
Kingdom, New Zealand, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, France, Malaysia, Brazil and Italy.
Humanitarian Aid. Two RAAF C130s conducted food drops to Cailaco and Suai. A third food drop to have been conducted by a
