Changes to calls made from local network to mobile phones mean more choice for consumers
One of the last remaining Telstra monopolies will come to an end, with the implementation of fixed to mobile pre-selection. The ACA announced today that pre-selection for calls originating on Telstra's local networks and terminating on mobile networks is being implemented.
With more than five million mobile services in operation in Australia, the traffic amounts to around 3 billion minutes per year. This translates into a market of more than one billion dollars per year which is now being opened up to competition.
The ACA confirmed that Telstra is now progressively giving further pre-selection access to competitors - these competitors will now be able to add calls to mobile phones to their existing long distance and international products. For consumers, this means that the choice associated with long distance and international calls will now extend to calls made from the home or office to mobiles.
Mr Tony Shaw, the Chairman of the ACA, said "These network changes by Telstra will increase competition over a greater range of services and benefit consumers. Competitors in the market will now have the opportunity to package calls to mobiles with their long distance and international products. We expect service providers to offer real discounts with this broader product range. Consumers will of course need to shop around to obtain the best deals."
The ACA applauds the significant industry consultation and coordination in implementing the necessary network and procedural changes. The new access arrangements will be progressively rolled out nationally over an eight week period. The ACA decided in December 1998 to mandate 'fixed to mobile' pre-selection.
