The 2000 Olympics Torch will come to New Zealand on its way from Greece to Sydney, between June 5-7 next year. A total of 300 torch bearers will carry the Olympic flame through Queenstown, Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua and Auckland on its historic three day journey before heading to Sydney.
Nominations of interest are now being sought for torch bearers to carry the symbolic flame during its circuit of Auckland. The torch relay will be linked to a 'millennium dreambank' which will accumulate messages of goodwill as it journeys through the country. In association with the New Zealand Olympic Committee, Auckland City is organising the local event.
A unique feature of the New Zealand relay will be an emphasis on involving local schools. People who have made a significant contribution to society, performed a major feat, shown extreme generosity, or made a contribution to the lives of New Zealanders are being sought.
Nominations are open until November 30 - full application details in next weeks issue of 'City Scene'.
