The National/Act regime has been dealt another stinging blow with the publication of Garth George's column in this morning's New Zealand Herald. Mr George's damning commentary spells disaster for National/Act regime candidates standing in electorates in and around Manukau City.
"Garth George has correctly identified the failure of the dying National/Act regime. One can only conclude that this Government is all about shrinking the economy, blowing the current account deficit, increasing rents for low income families, food parcels, poverty and gonorrhoea," said Labour's Manurewa Electorate Campaign Manager Daniel Newman.
The November 27 poll presents voters with an opportunity to vote the National/Act regime out of office. The current Government have given voters many reasons to do just that.
"In 1998 there were 10,185 recorded burglaries committed in Counties Manukau. Only 7.1% of those recorded burglaries were resolved. That damning statistic represents the essence of life under the National/Act regime," said Daniel Newman.
Prime Minister Jenny Shipley has made the statement that her Government had delivered "10 very successful years." The social and economic problems confronting this region illustrate that Mrs Shipley is out of touch with the hopes, dreams and aspirations of local residents. This is a point which Garth George has so eloquently pointed out.
"Mrs Shipley appears to equate skyrocketing crime rates, a deteriorating current account deficit and a doubling in rates of gonorrhoea as an indication of success. Most Manukau City residents see this as an indication of failure. That is why local residents will not be voting for the National/Act regime on polling day," said Daniel Newman.
