How far for Highway 20?

Auckland City Council's Transport and Roading Committee is supporting the extension of State Highway 20 from Hillsborough Road to Richardson Road.
But it wants more study and consultation on what happens between Richardson Road and the North Western Motorway.
This would be the next stage of the Transit NZ project to provide a state highway linking Manukau City in the south to Waitakere City in the north.
Chairwoman of the Council's Transport and Roading Committee, Councillor Catherine Harland, says Transit will lead investigations into possible options for a link from Richardson Road to the North Western Motorway.
Auckland City will not support any roading option that might compromise the "liveability" of Avondale. The future viability of public transport and the ecology of Oakley Creek and local reserves are also key issues.
"We are looking for innovative solutions to minimise the impact of the extension on the community and the environment, and a design process that informs and involves the community."
She says that while the need for a connection through the western part of the city is recognised, at this stage the options have not been identified or investigated.
"We are not making any commitment to the completing link, other than to call for more studies and consultation."
