Portugal Calls For Peacekeepers in Timor - Portugal’s Prime Minister has appealed to the Untied Nations to send in armed peacekeepers to quell the growing bloodshed in East Timor. Up to 145 people have died in the past 24 hours. The UN says 1500 people are under siege in its compound in Dili at the mercy of Indonesian militia. The UN security council is now meeting behind closed doors in New York to discuss the situation in the former Portuguese colony. Portugal’s PM says armed intervention is the only answer.
Indonesian Officials Deployed To Timor - Meanwhile Indonesia has sent a high powered group of officials to East Timor in an attempt to restore calm. The Indonesian foreign minister says there will be strong action by his Government to end the bloodshed.
Australia Sends Rescue Aircraft - Australia has sent aircraft to East Timor to pick up up to 300 non-essential UN personnel.
Lost Girl Found - Back Home the seven year old south Auckland girl who went missing from a playground, has been found safe and well. She went missing from an Otara playground yesterday afternoon. Police searched for the girl throughout the night. But the seven year old was found this morning, it appears she had stayed with relatives overnight.
