Spy Faxes Sent To Chicken Factory - Top secret fax documents, including codenames relating to US President Bill
Clinton’s visit here next week for the APEC summit have been arriving at a south Auckland chicken processing factory.
Instead of orders for chickens, the faxes contain messages on security issues such as the installation of White House
communications equipment at Auckland International Airport. The faxed documents contain the names and car registration
details of military communications officials. APEC Operations spokesperson Robyn Orchard says police are investigating
the matter: “We are obviously looking into the situation in conjunction with the Americans. However, it is really a
matter for the Americans to address themselves.” She is pleased the faxes went to a responsible member of the public.
UN Call To East Timor - Support from Foreign Minister Don McKinnon for suggestions for the United Nations are prepared
to send peacekeeping forces to East Timor. Violence is continuing to sweep the province in the wake of the autonomy
referendum, with two more UN workers stabbed to death overnight. Mr McKinnon says the UN can’t take any action until the
results of the ballot are known. However he says a UN promise to send peacekeepers could improve the situation: “People
would feel a lot more comfortable with just the knowledge that that was going to happen.” Meanwhile the New Zealand MPs
that are monitoring the ballot left East Timor last night and are now in Jakarta.
