Ken the Y2K cockroach has a serious message for Aucklanders this week: it's time to begin putting together their B Ready Kits.
Arriving in letterboxes about Wednesday will be a B Y2K Wise Guide, explaining how householders should prepare for a possible three day interruption to one or more essential services betwee 31 December 1999 and 31 March 2000.
The guide is being distributed by the government's Y2K Readiness Commission to every household in the country. It includes a checklist of things people can collect together, just as they would for any natural emergency.
Commission chairman Basil Logan says New Zealand is well prepared for Y2K by international standards, but that doesn't mean we can assume that we would not be affected.
"There are no guarantees that we will avoid interruptions to essential services, although the commission's current view is that any interruptions are likely to be localised and of short duration."
He says Ken's constant reminder to New Zealanders over the next few months will be: 'All it takes is a little bit of planning, a little bit of thought'.
