Ninety-eight per cent of people, who made submissions on Auckland City Council's proposal to extend the North Western
cycleway into the central city, supported the idea.
When built, the Waterview to City extension will give cyclists a continuous and mostly off-road cycle path from Te Atatu
in Waitakere City to Upper Queen Street. Pedestrians will also be able to use it.
The Council's Transport and Roading Committee today endorsed the development of the cycleway extension.
Committee chairwoman, Cr Catherine Harland, says the Council hopes to begin work on the first stage - probably the St
Lukes Road to City leg - this financial year.
Future stages would be Carrington Road to St Lukes Road, and an overbridge across Great North Road and the motorway
off-ramp at the Waterview interchange.
The Council, in conjunction with Transit NZ, is currently revising its economic evaluation of the project, in
preparation for an application for funding to Transfund. The estimated total cost of the project is $1.1 million.
Cr Harland says the cycleway extension would be one more step towards developing the citywide network of cycle paths
planned to encourage cycling for both commuting and recreation.
As well as providing an easier and safer route for experienced cyclists, it would be used by school children and
students.
Consultation was carried out in June to gauge support for the project. Of the 635 responses to the consultation, 98 per
cent supported the proposal and 95 per cent of people said they would use it for cycling, walking or both.
Clearly people are keen to have this cycleway built so they can use it.
