Planning ahead will be the key to avoiding transport problems during next month’s APEC leaders meeting in central
Auckland.
The leaders meeting will be held in the city on Sunday 12 September and Monday 13 September, although Saturday will also
be busy as the leaders arrive and are driven in from the airport. The busiest day will be the Monday, especially at
normal rush-hour traffic times.
The police have advised that the Southern Motorway is on one of three routes liable to be used for motorcades travelling
to and from the city on Saturday and Monday.
The northbound lane of the motorway is likely to be closed at times on Saturday, September 12 and the southbound lane
will be affected as the delegations leave on the Monday evening.
The police have also announced that some central city streets shown on this map will be closed throughout the three-day
period, while the route to the Domain will be closed at times on Monday to allow the leaders to attend their main
meeting at the museum.
The road closures will not affect pedestrians, although pedestrians without APEC accreditation will be excluded from a
secure zone around the Town Hall, Aotea Centre and Aotea Square.
So what can you do to avoid being caught in a traffic snarl-up during APEC? The answer is to plan ahead and consider
options such as:
* working from home
* starting and finishing work early or late
* using public transport
* taking leave or time off work in lieu
Further information on traffic during APEC will be available from a special 0800 telephone service to be announced
shortly and through further publicity, including a special City Scene supplement.
