Three men are in custody after a high-speed car chase took police on an hour long pursuit through south Auckland suburbs this afternoon.
A police officer was been injured during the chase which began after a burglary tip-off. A police car was rammed when police went to investigate.
A host of charges are about to be laid against the driver of a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and his accomplices.
Police say the driver attempted to ram two police officers. One officer is now being treated in hospital for injuries sustained in the chase.
The dramatic high speed pursuit left south Auckland's Mangere Motorway in chaos.
Two mud covered police cars were sidelined in the chase which began in Papakura, south of Auckland, and saw the offenders swap cars, attempt to run over two police officers who were on foot. The offenders then headed off toward and then through the Manukau City suburb of Mangere.
The chase ended north of the Mangere Motorway Bridge, after the northbound 4-wheel-drive vehicle crossed over the medium barrier and began to head south again. Police cut the vehicle off near Onehunga and forced it onto a grassy verge at the side of the motorway.
Traffic was banked up for several kilometres in the northbound lane and to the Hillsborough Road intersection on the southbound lanes.
