Flu kills 100 in one month in South Auckland

Published: Tue 6 Jul 1999 10:35 PM
One hundred southern Auckland residents have died from the Flu within the past month. The “winter ills” as it is called in health circles is most dangerous to children and the elderly.
South Auckland Health management announced today that the region’s main hospital, Middlemore, has been inundated with acute admissions of patients suffering from serious respiratory illness and severe influenza.
The hospital continues to be at crisis point with record admissions and doctor and nursing staff working to capacity.
Last month the hospital announced the mild winter was over and that a virulent strain of Flu had reached epidemic levels in Auckland. It cancelled elective surgery and opened those wards to care for the influx of acutely ill people.
This advent was predicted in a Freelance New Zealand column and investigation in late May http://www.angelfire.com/ak2/freelancenz/fnzsthauckhous.html
This article was attacked by south Auckland based National MP Arthur Anae as doomsday rubbish http://www.angelfire.com/ak2/freelancenz/FNZ20NewsGovt.html
Clearly the evidence shows South Auckland Health’s chief executive officer, David Clarke is correct in saying, the winter ills crisis is a funding problem - ref http://www.angelfire.com/ak2/freelancenz/fnzsthauckhous.html
