Level Two water restrictions in place for Levin and Ōhau

Horowhenua District Council has announced Level Two water restrictions for residents connected to town water supplies in Levin and Ōhau, effective from Wednesday 13 February.
Water Services Engineer Levaai Toremana said the restrictions have been raised to Level 2 due to high demand for water and dropping flows in the Ōhau River, which is the source of the water supply for Levin and Ōhau.
“We encourage everyone to do their bit to help save water. There are some simple things you can do to conserve water at home, such as turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving, checking for leaks on your property, sweeping up garden waste rather than hosing it away, doing only full loads in the washing machine or dishwasher, and taking shorter showers,” she said.
Level Two water restrictions mean:
• Garden sprinklers and soak hoses must not be used at any time.
• Handheld hoses may only be used from 5am to 7am and from 7pm to 9pm on alternate days: houses with even street numbers on even dates; houses with odd street numbers on odd dates.
• Watering cans and buckets can be used on your odd/even dates at any time.
• Watering of public parks, gardens and reserves by bore water only.
• Hosing of paved areas is prohibited unless cleaning is required as a result of an accident, fire, health hazard or other emergency.
• Newly constructed swimming pools must not be filled, and existing swimming pools and spas can only be topped up using a garden hose on Wednesdays between 6am and 8am and between 5pm and 7pm. Portable paddling pools of no more than 100 litres may be filled using a garden hose at any time.
• Water flow at boat-washing facilities will be restricted to 1.5 litres per minute.
Residents can obtain further information on the Water Restrictions page of the Council’s website, www.horowhenua.govt.nz/WaterRestrictions, or by contacting Horowhenua District Council on (06) 366 0999 or enquiries@horowhenua.govt.nz.
