The NZ Transport Agency advises drivers to allow extra time for their journeys along the Wairau Valley Highway, SH63, in
Tasman District, from next week into early December.
Road repairs will be underway from the Korere/Tophouse Rd intersection to St Arnaud village from Monday, 29 October to
the first week in December. There will be minor delays with speed restrictions and Stop/Go traffic management in place.
With the start of the summer road construction season, upgrading and strengthening works are being undertaken on three
sections of the highway for more comfortable and safe travel.
“With the reopening of SH1 through Kaikōura, traffic volumes on this route are largely back to pre-Kaikōura earthquake
levels, but providing a safe and resilient alternate route to SH1 remains a high priority for the Transport Agency,”
says Transport Agency Top of South System Manager Frank Porter.
“The warmer and drier spring and summer months is the only time we can reliably undertake this work in this alpine
environment. We encourage travellers to be aware of road workers and to follow temporary speed restrictions through work
sites to keep everyone safe,” he says.
“Keeping your speed down where sealing work is underway or has just been completed not only helps to settle in the new
road surface, it will also prevent stone chips flying into windscreens and protect our crews.”
