They’re Off and it’s All On
GO Waihi’s annual Trolley Derby and Market Day is coming up again on Saturday October 6. From 9 am there’ll be lots of
stalls through town to add even more variety to the shops with sales and specials on offer. Cafes, restaurants and
eateries will take care of the hunger pangs and the town will be filled with the sounds of the Kerepehi Brass Band. Add
the Kati Katz band with Dixieland jazz and you’re in for a musical treat through the morning. There’s also a model boat
display in the Memorial Hall with a wide variety of boats, from steam and sail to warships, schooners and more. These
boats are scale models that can reach 2 to 3 metres in length.
Just after 10 am in front of the Memorial Hall there’s going to be a Fashion Show with a difference, featuring school
students modelling clothes and outfits made from recycled items.
Downtown Waihi will be transformed into a race track of sorts come midday with the annual GO Waihi Trolley Derby getting
underway at midday, with Waihi Lions and Waihi Beach Dirt Track helping run the day. There’ll be prizes and loads of fun
with entrants heading down the Haszard Street hill and around the corner to the finish line in the main street. Then
it’s back to the top for as many runs as can be fitted in. And there’s also the Emergency Services Challenge between St
John, Police, Fire Service and Coastguard; always hotly contested, sometimes too hotly!
There are categories for men and women, and boys and girls of all ages, and there’s an open class for trolleys that are
a little different and don’t quite fit the regular dimensions. Think outside the square and come up with something
different, like the Tardis, the banana and hamburger trolleys we’ve seen in the past.
Entry is free for trolleys and forms are out now at the Hauraki District Council office in Rosemont Rd, Gold FM on the
corner of Seddon and Haszard Streets, on line at www.waihi.org.nzand by emailing info@waihi.org.nz. Application forms for stalls are at the same places and sites are just $15. There are still some good sites available
if you are quick. GO Waihi is after stalls with handmade crafty things that complement what the shops have, rather than
doubling up.
Get ready to cheer on the brave hardy souls willing to take on the challenge of ‘The Haszard Street Hill’ course and
remember with GO Waihi Rule Number One is to Have Fun.
