Dunedin asked to “Step On It” for blood cancer patients
Charity event is first for Dunedin
Dunedin residents are being encouraged to take part in the first Stadium Climb to raise funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC).
The funds raised by participants will be used to support patients and their families living with leukaemia, lymphoma,
myeloma and other serious blood conditions in Dunedin and the wider Otago region.
The inaugural Stadium Climb, taking place at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sunday, September 16, is a first for Dunedin.
Participants will take on over 5,000 stairs up, down and around the stands finishing on the field of play.
LBC chose Dunedin for its inaugural Stadium Climb to support its newly opened Support Centre in the city. LBC’s Support
Services are committed to improving the quality of life of patients, their caregivers and families living in the Otago
region.
LBC Support Services Manager Emma Barker says that blood cancer patients and their families in Otago have long needed
personalised support services.
“We’re absolutely thrilled that the Dunedin Support Centre is now open and providing patients with support in facing the
practical and emotional challenges of living with a blood cancer.”
A practical challenge for patients in the Otago region is its sheer size, which means they may have to travel long
distances to reach needed treatment, leaving little time or money for other things. LBC aims to ease the burden placed
on families, and support can include financial assistance or something as simple as delivering groceries.
Equally as important as the practical issues, patients often need someone to answer questions and listen to concerns.
“While patients across the country have access to our online information resources, being able to speak with someone
face to face and to share experiences with fellow patients in a dedicated space is invaluable,” says Ms Barker.
“We really hope that Dunedin will get behind the Stadium Climb and show their support for blood cancer patients and
their families in the region.”
LBC is also asking for volunteers and local businesses to help put on this community event.
Participants will experience the unique atmosphere of Forsyth Barr, a stadium that has hosted a vast array of events
from international rugby and the world’s most iconic performers to community and business events.

A second Stadium Climb is planned for Wellington in November to raise funds for the city’s local LBC Support Services
Centre.
