Gisborne whānau join forces to eliminate plastic

Kapai Kaiti is working towards zero waste and is now a Para Kore organisation. Para Kore is a national programme that
supports marae and community groups by educating whānau to reduce waste by avoiding products such as single-use
plastics, reusing, recycling and composting. "Kapai Kaiti has a vision for sustainable living and zero waste" says Kapai
Kaiti General Manager, Tuta Ngarimu.

says Pania Ruakere, Para Kore Kaiarahi for Tūranganui-a-Kiwa.
On 13th July a 24hr Bagathon will be held. This is a colloaboration between Kapai Kaiti and Plastic Bag Free Tairawhiti
in the Kaiti Mall to sew bags that will eventually fade out single-use plastic bags so that our region can become free
of plastic bags.
“Gisborne whānau are coming together to sew shopping bags in an effort to eliminate plastics in our communities” says
Plastic Bag Free Tairawhiti spokesperson Nicky Solomon. We all know that we are facing a huge challenge across the
world. Plastic pollution is affecting our beaches, our rivers and our communities. Often, a bag is only used for a few
minutes, but it will never break down.”
The event, hosted by Kapai Kaiti, will be Para Kore of course and participants are asked to minimise waste at the
Bagathon and sort rubbish in the right bin for recycling. We invite you to come along and be part of the solution.
