The Hawke’s Bay District’s Secondary Schools’ Years 7-13 Chess Tournament was held in the Hastings Sports Centre (May 18), attracting 121 players from 19 Hawke’s Bay Schools.
The tournament was jointly organised by Hastings District Council and Hawke’s Bay Chess Inc.
Mike Earle, President of Hawke’s Bay Chess Inc. and organiser of the tournament since its inception 39 years ago was pleased with the continued participation and noted Nuhaka’s dominance at intermediate level, and Napier Boys’ High School and Lindisfarne’s strengths at secondary level.
The annual tournament is one of three to be held throughout the year, with a teams’ tournament in August and junior tournament in October to follow.
