"Arrest made in historic Palmerston North bank robbery case"
A 41 year old man has been arrested and charged in relation to the 2007 robbery of the Rangitikei Street branch of BNZ, Palmerston North.
The bank was robbed on the 24th of May 2007 by a man who presented what appeared to be a pistol at three tellers and demanded money.
He left the bank with around $1400 shortly after.
The three women tellers were shaken by the incident but not injured.
The pistol was an imitation.
The investigation was reopened a few months ago and a search warrant was carried out in Palmerston North today, March 8.
The 41 year old man was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and cannabis cultivation.
He is due to appear in the Palmerston North District Court on the 15th of March.
Detective Sergeant David Thompson says it is a great result.
“The phone call to the three ladies that were directly affected by the robbery was extremely satisfying.”
“As you can imagine they were delighted by the news, albeit a little surprised given the passage of time.
“We are always reviewing cases like this to see if anything has changed, it goes to show you can run but you can’t hide forever.”
It is also a timely reminder for anyone who has information on any historic crimes that they think could help to contact their local police station or report the information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
