Firefighters put out scrap metal blaze in Auckland - final update
Firefighters have extinguished a huge fire at a scrap metal yard in Auckland.
The fire broke out at the yard on James Fletcher Drive, between the suburbs of Favona and Ōtāhuhu, in the early hours of
yesterday morning.
At its height, 80 fire personnel were fighting the blaze, which engulfed 1600-tonnes of scrap metal.
Firefighters worked through the night to dampen the flames and about 20 firefighters, along with three fire trucks,
remain at the scene.
Incident controller Chris Power says the fire is now out and crews are working to dampen any hotspots.
They are expected to remain there for the next couple of hours.
James Fletcher Drive has been reopened, after it was cordoned off as firefighters battled the fire.
Mr Power says it's been hard, dirty work for the crews.
"Our firefighters have worked extremely hard, many working through the night and the early hours of the morning to get
this blaze under control," he says.
Yesterday excavators were used to help break up the pile of scrap metal to make it easier to put the fire out.
Fire investigators have now visited the site and the cause of the blaze is yet to be established.
