Auckland Business Leaders Cooking for a mission
On Wednesday March 7th, 12 of Auckland’s top business leaders will don chef jackets to prepare a meal for 150 special Auckland City Mission guests at the inaugural Auckland City Mission CookOff being held at St Matthews in-the-city. The guests are a mix of rough sleepers, homeless people that have recently been housed and families who receive emergency food assistance.
The Mission is running the event to give business leaders the opportunity to do something positive for families and individuals living in poverty in their community and to highlight the high level of food insecurity in Auckland. The event will also raise crucial funds for the operation of the Mission’s Crisis Care and Community Support Service, with business leaders being asked to fundraise as part of their participation.
Auckland City Missioner, Chris Farrelly says “Every year the Mission provides almost 13,000 emergency food parcels to families and individuals who come to us in desperate need. These food parcels feed over 41,000 people.”
He continues, “We see people who everyday struggle to put food on their tables. This shouldn’t be happening in New Zealand and as a country we need to do something to change this. Food insecurity is often quite hidden, or the true depth of it masked, so we want to raise it as a social issue that needs to be addressed. The City Mission CookOff is a positive way of doing this.”
Three well-known chefs have volunteered to take on the challenge of designing the menus and leading the three teams of business leaders to prepare the three course meal for the 150 guests. The chefs are Nadia Lim, Michael Van de Elzen and Nici Wickes. All three chefs were delighted to be part of such an important community event when approached by the Mission.
