Dunedin Fire - Update 3

Dunedin Fire - Update 3

Heavy rain overnight has helped firefighters who have been working tirelessly to help contain the fire in Burnside, Dunedin.

Incident Controller Phil Marsh says six crews have been working overnight.

The fire appears to have been contained, and the situation will be re-evaluated shortly.

Excavators have been used to create a firebreak on the western flank of the fire, while crews patrolled the nearby residential area through the night to put out hotspots and prevent any flare ups.

About 8mm of rain has fallen since midnight, which has helped crews enormously.

"We've been fortunate to have some rain, which is helping, but it could turn the other way, with 42mm forecast for today," he says.

An assessment would be made at 8am today as to whether residents from the 100 homes that were evacuated last night will be able to return home.

A decision will also be made as to whether nearby Concord School will open for students today.

He is addressing a community briefing for residents at 8am at the St Clair Golf Course.

Phil Marsh praised the work of urban and rural firefighters and volunteers, who together mounted a swift response.

"A lot of people have worked very hard to come up with the best response we can."

At the height of the fire, six helicopters were used and there were over 100 personnel on the ground.

"Six helicopters was the most helicopters were could send up to respond safely in that small area," he says.

A further update is expected about 9am.
