The Mountain Safety Council (MSC) applauds the efforts of Mr Friedmann who endured a harrowing ordeal in the Kawhia Harbour region on Saturday. Mike Daisley, CEO of MSC is quick to point out that this incident had the potential to become much worse.
"Mr Friedmann is a great example of a hunter who prepared for unexpected incidents. He managed to stay calm and not make the situation worse."
"He deserves credit for speaking out about this incident as a warning to other backcountry users. His message is a timely reminder heading into the Roar this year. Incidents happen, and you need to be prepared to respond, particularly hunting alone in the bush."
"If we're talking about all hunting types then 'knife wounds' do not play a significant part in the overall numbers of injuries. But if we focus just on pig hunting then 'knife wounds' comprise 13.2% of those injuries," said Daisley.
"The leading injury cause across all hunting types is falling, and by quite some margin. Falling is also the leading individual cause of fatality for hunters as well," he concluded.
MSC has a range of resources and tools for hunters to get informed on how to plan a safe and enjoyable trip. Head to www.mountainsafety.org.nz for more information about PLB's and hunting safety.
